Monkeypox, a viral zoonotic disease, presents with a range of symptoms that can vary in severity. Early detection is crucial for effective management and preventing further spread. This guide outlines the key symptoms to watch out for, enabling individuals to seek prompt medical attention if necessary.

  1. Fever

An elevated body temperature, often one of the initial symptoms. Temperatures typically range from 100.4°F (38°C) or higher. May be accompanied by chills.

  2. Headache

Persistent or severe headache, often described as throbbing or pressure-like. Can range in intensity from mild to debilitating.

  3. Muscle Aches (Myalgia)

Generalized muscle pain and stiffness throughout the body. Can affect various muscle groups, including the back, legs, and arms.

  4. Backache

Pain in the lower or upper back, often described as dull, aching, or sharp. May be accompanied by stiffness or limited range of motion.

  5. Swollen Lymph Nodes (Lymphadenopathy)

Enlargement of lymph nodes, particularly in the neck, armpits, or groin. Swollen nodes may be tender to the touch.

Persistent feeling of tiredness or lack of energy, even after adequate rest. Can be debilitating and interfere with daily activities.

  7. Skin Rash

The hallmark symptom of monkeypox. Typically starts 1-3 days after fever. Evolves through stages: macules (flat spots), papules (raised bumps), vesicles (small fluid-filled blisters), pustules (pus-filled blisters), and scabs.

  9. Progression of Rash Lesions

Lesions progress through distinct stages, becoming raised and filled with clear or yellowish fluid. Eventually, they scab over and resolve.

  10. Itching

The rash may be itchy, causing significant discomfort.

  11. Pain

The lesions can be painful, especially if located in sensitive areas such as the genitals or mouth.
