- Fever
An elevated body temperature, often one of the initial symptoms. Temperatures typically range from 100.4°F (38°C) or higher. May be accompanied by chills.
- Headache
Persistent or severe headache, often described as throbbing or pressure-like. Can range in intensity from mild to debilitating.
- Muscle Aches (Myalgia)
Generalized muscle pain and stiffness throughout the body. Can affect various muscle groups, including the back, legs, and arms.
- Backache
Pain in the lower or upper back, often described as dull, aching, or sharp. May be accompanied by stiffness or limited range of motion.
- Swollen Lymph Nodes (Lymphadenopathy)
Enlargement of lymph nodes, particularly in the neck, armpits, or groin. Swollen nodes may be tender to the touch.
- Exhaustion (Fatigue)
Persistent feeling of tiredness or lack of energy, even after adequate rest. Can be debilitating and interfere with daily activities.
- Skin Rash
The hallmark symptom of monkeypox. Typically starts 1-3 days after fever. Evolves through stages: macules (flat spots), papules (raised bumps), vesicles (small fluid-filled blisters), pustules (pus-filled blisters), and scabs.
- Rash Location
The rash can appear on the face, inside the mouth, or on other parts of the body, like the hands, feet, chest, genitals, or anus.
- Progression of Rash Lesions
Lesions progress through distinct stages, becoming raised and filled with clear or yellowish fluid. Eventually, they scab over and resolve.
- Itching
The rash may be itchy, causing significant discomfort.
- Pain
The lesions can be painful, especially if located in sensitive areas such as the genitals or mouth.
